Archer Cabinets and Countertops, located at 8381 Old Hwy 31 in Morris, Alabama, has served customers in the Birmingham area for over 20 years.
Lessons from his father
Archer Cabinets opened its doors in 2001, but the business started much earlier. Kelly Archer worked as he was growing up with his father, making cabinets in the garage. Standing next to his father, finding tools, measuring the wood, staining, and cleaning up afterward, he watched his father turn wood into beautiful cabinets. His father had learned from his father, Kelly’s grandfather, and diligently taught him everything he had learned years before about making the highest quality, sturdy cabinets that hold up through time.
Living in Gardendale, Mr. Archer proudly watched as Kelly decided to become a Birmingham firefighter. Putting his life on the line on a daily basis, Kelly enjoyed the job and found the rewards outweighed the danger. He continued his service for 29 years until this past July, when he retired to work in the family cabinet business full-time.
Garage Cabinet making
Kelly continued to work with his father designing cabinets as he carried out his duties for the fire department. He eventually moved the business to a building in Morris, near his home, and devoted his time and energy to the craft his father taught him.
He now has six dedicated employees, including two of his five children. His wife of 25 years, Melissa, keeps the books for him while holding down a full-time administration job at the Alabama Children’s Home. Jamie Perry is in charge of designs and sales, while his master builders make up the remaining staff. His dad, now 77, still works out of his garage but occasionally shows up at the shop to give advice and a nod of approval.
