3 Generations of Day Eye Care

July 19, 2022

In business for over 90 years and with the love for caring for others, Gardendale’s Day Eye Care has provided quality eye care for thousands of customers

Family-Owned Business

3 Generations of family members have contributed to the strong foundation of service and quality that Day Eye Care is renowned for. Two years ago, in October of 2020, Day Eye Care celebrated an epic milestone. 100 years of providing eye and vision care.

It was in 1920 that Frances J. Day Sr. received his reciprocity license in Alabama allowing him to open the optometry practice. Dr. Howard Day is Frances Day’s grandson. Dr. Howard Day has shared that obtaining the license wasn’t easy for his grandfather, it took determination, hard work, and sacrifice.  He opened his practice in the 1920s while Birmingham was a booming city. The new eye doctor did well until the depression came, and while he still managed to help people, payment was often bartered or made in small increments. Dr. Day used the same method with his suppliers to help his practice stay afloat.

After Dr. Day passed away in 1945 at the age of 50, his two sons, F.J. Day Jr and Jim H. Day Sr kept the family business going. Howard Day has worked at the practice since childhood and owns the clinic today. He likes to tell people he “grew up working on the family farm”. There’s not a job at the office he’s not done, painter, plumber, or carpenter, but it was second nature for him to follow in his father’s footsteps and want to be an optometrist. His father was his mentor and a strong inspiration.

Dr. Howard and Sharon Day

Howard and Sharon met as students and have been married for 35 years. Dr. Howard Day graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, School of Optometry in 1987. He has over 35 years of diverse experience, especially in Optometry. Dr. Sharon Schnell Day also has more than 35 years of experience.

This husband and wife team carries on the family business with quality care for their patients. The clinic has grown to include five optometrists. All the doctors utilize the latest in technology, knowledge, and research for their exams and care. Howard and Sharon Day run the clinic today with a professional and caring attitude that promises to preserve, protect, and enhance your vision so you can see your best for your entire life.
